Kierston Fu: What Makes Your Blog Tick?

It’s time for our monthly series happening on Oatmeal in my Bowl – What Makes Your Blog Tick?

It’s here we’ll interview health, fitness & foodie bloggers, from all ranges of online visibility. You will get to know the blogger and you will also discover what makes their blog tick.

One unique quality and/or process that helps their blog be successful.

Because many of you are asking what it takes to grow your blog into mean, lean running machine. Let’s get started, shall we?

Welcome, Kierston! Tell us a Little about yourself and your blog

Hi! My name is Kierston Fu, also known as *CaNdY*.

Prior to my commitment to get fit and healthy, I took no part in any form of physical activity for seven years, nor did I care enough to do anything about it.

After doing a complete 180 (just two years ago), my goal was to share my experiences about my lifestyle change and how I was able to sustain it day to day (and to this day!)! This is when *CaNdY FiT* was born. (I do love my *CaNdY*!)

Furthermore, my blog was created to share my continuing journey in a lifestyle fuelled by exercisehealthy eating, and most importantly, balance! It was also a way for me to document my prep to my very first Fitness Competition as well as my daily ventures with my family, friends and of course, my boyfriend SuperFit! (And now, our new puppy Teddy Bear!)

My hope has always been to motivate and inspire others to see that it is possible to make positive lifestyle changes and that you can in fact make your goals, a reality!

What is your favorite recipe, go-to-healthy meal, or nutrition tip?

There are so many recipes I enjoy and drool over, how am I to choose?!

I really enjoy recipes that include Peanut Butter! I swear, every time I see PB in the list of ingredients I get excited!

Having said that, my favorite meal of the day is breakfast and I’ve got to say, I absolutely love my Banana Oatmeal Protein Pancakes topped with that Peanut Butter goodness! Ughhhhh, I’m drooling just thinking about it! ;)

Right now, my go-to healthy meal is one I recently cooked up for the very first time! What is it? Pan Seared Sesame Crusted Tuna Steaks! It’s easy, it’s quick to make and it’s absolutely mouthwatering and satisfying (well, at least I think it is! lol).

If I were to offer one nutrition tip, it would be impossible! So, I’m going to offer two.

Always plan your meals ahead of time, that way you are never stuck without anything to fuel up with. Also, always include a source of Protein with every meal you eat. You want to keep those muscles strong and happy!

My Personal Question to You
“Kierston, your weight training completely inspires me. It sounds like nutrition is about 70% of the battle towards a strong, lean body. What is a typical day of eats when you are going for a lean body due to competition or because… say.. summer is coming up? ;) And how do you find the strength to stick to your lean diet regimen?”

I always ensure I eat lean proteins with each and every single meal I prepare or snack on.  Eating anywhere between 5-6 small meals a day, I make sure I give my body what it needs to stay strong and healthy, especially with all of the activities I enjoy getting involved in. If I’m leaning out, I introduce carb cycling into the mix of things. I always have a plan/program based on the specific goals I am working towards, be it a competition or not.

In terms of finding the strength to stick to a lean regimen, I enjoy and find pleasure in the foods I eat. In the changes I introduced into my new lifestyle, I found ways to cook up my favorites meals the lean and clean way!(Coming from a person who discovered she likes to cook about two years ago!) Just because it’s healthy, lean and/or clean doesn’t mean it’s tasteless.

There are so many ways you can healthify your favorite eats, and that’s exactly what I do! I love experimenting and finding new ways to keep my regimen fun, interesting and best of all, tasty! :) I don’t think of my diet as something that limits me from living. It’s a choice and a commitment I made to my overall health and well-being. And if I’m working towards a goal, then I’m working towards results and that keeps me motivated! (And please, don’t get me wrong, I do indulge but I do practice balance and moderation based on a system that works for me and my body!) In the end, it’s about finding your balance and a regimen that works for you.

What is your favorite exercise and why?

I love, LOVE weight training! I love the feeling of lifting weights, it’s so empowering! You’re building strength, muscle and power with each and every exercise you do! I remember when I first started out and how I used to shy away from the weight room. Not anymore! I should mention that I used to really dislike the machine shoulder press as I couldn’t lift a mere 15lbs without struggling. That machine used to rule me! Now, two years later, I’m up to 105lbs! Who’s ruling now?! Hehe

Haha. I dislike the shoulder press machine for the same reason. Funny you mention it. But I am still practicing to rule it like you. Nice job, Kierston!

What makes your blog tick?

I love being able to share my journey in health and fitness with others. I also enjoy sharing those simple every day little things that make my life whole. I choose not to limit my writing because there is simply too much to write about :) Let’s just say, my blog has given my thoughts and passions a voice, to which anyone can come by, say hello, hang out and stay a while!

You can follow Kierston through her blogfacebook page and twitter!

Great Interview, Kierston! Thank you for sharing all this great information about weight lifting, nutrition and a couple of your favorite recipes.

K, peeps. If you noticed, Kierston’s blog Candy Fit has focused direction – exercise, healthy eating, and balance. While its a must to invoke passion into your blog (because the blog is about YOU), its also important to have a clear direction on your blog.
