Dinner, Dumbells and DOMS

Glad you all share the same excitement in a hypothetical, but potential road trip to some awesome conferences! Because there is a month in between two of the conferences, I thought it would be fun to pass Salt Lake City, Utah, onward to Gardnerville, NV to stay with family for a couple of weeks, and then up through Portland, Oregon to Seattle, WA.

Dinner

Watch out! Mac is getting creative in the kitchen. And I was loving last night’s dinner!
I usually don’t get home from work til late. So Mac will fix dinner as the kids are starving before I get home.

Hot Roast beef sandwiches on Rye bread.

A side of fruit salad. Nom!

And some Amy’s Lentil Soup. Yum… This was the perfect dinner. Especially because I wasn’t craving anything heavy last night.

Workout

I set the online tabata timer for 5 cycles of 1-minute, no rest in between.

5-min Cardio Warm-Up:

  • 1-minute knee highs
  • 1-minute jumping jacks
  • 1-minute front kicks
  • 1-minute jumping jacks
  • 1-minute butt kicks

Then, completed this lower body workout portion (with a few additional weight modifications) from this article on AskMen: Weight Training Without Weights

Update: it did the job. My legs are feeling the DOMS.

Modifications: Step-ups with 20-pound dumbbells in each hand. And the Single-leg rising deadlifts with the same dumbbells in hand. Flat shoes like the Reebok RealFlex Crossfit Nanos and a strong core really helps to balance on that last exercise (no, I wasn’t wearing flat shoes, but am going to get me some or wear my chuck’s next time ;) ).

I’m in the market for a weight bench, as I need a higher step for step-ups. I am enjoying working out from home and it seems I slowly building my own home gym.

Post-workout, I whipped up my favorite Chocolate-Peanut Butter Smoothie.

Now I am off to nurse myself back to health. Woke up sick. Blah.

Question

I am curious to know, do you prefer working out from home or from the gym? And why?

  1. I am OBSESSED with Amy’s lentil and veggies soup! It’s the perfect lunch with some hummus & crackers and fruit!

  2. I definitely like working out in a gym better…One of the main reasons is that I’ve always lived in apartments so far and its just too cramped to move about! I also like to get out of the house and feel social (even if I am not necessarily working out with someone. You can’t beat all the equipment either!

  3. Can Mac come over and make dinner for me, too? ;) That’s a serious sandwich! And I want to reach through my screen and grab one of those blackberries from your fruit salad – they look so good! As for working out, I go through different phases: Sometimes I prefer to sweat it out at home and sometimes I like to go to the gym and take a class.

    • haha. shhh. don’t tell anyone, but I actually stole the other half of his sandwich! hehe.
And the boysenberries were my favorite part!

Lately, I have just been wanting to workout at home. And last night’s workout (link above) definitely did the trick. Tonight I did a new shoulder workout from Bodybuilding.com. That feels like it kicked some butt, too! Dom, Dom, Dom, dom….. DOMS ♫ ♫ ;)

I love the gym for all the equipment (plus seeing others working out keeps me motivated), but I love at home workouts so I can do my wacky moves and sing along to the music out loud!
Jen @nutcaseinpoint recently posted..Badda bing, badda boom

    • haha. I laughed when I saw the last part. I blare my music like there is no tomorrow. Singing along of course. I think I just have been jaded lately because when I go at night, its PACKED. and doesn’t stop til after 9. Plus the equipment by my work is 90% better than the old equipment at my gym. maybe my gym just needs to upgrade. haha.

Best way to build up your home gym… do it gradually as you determine what you like. I was browsing this a.m. and just stumbled upon another workout called the Spartacus workout from Men’s Health magazine. I was directed to Men’s Health from a blog , peachypalate.com where there were many favorable comments about the workout.
