New Blue, Red and Silver Edition of Red Bull Energy Drinks (blueberry, cranberry and lime)
This past weekend (birthday weekend – queue party blower), I was given the opportunity to attend the annual Red Bull Flugtag event in Long Beach. Where I was able to hang out with Red Bull’s registered dietician (and Director of Scientific & Regulatory Affairs), Becki Holmes, to learn first hand about Red Bull’s Energy Drink Nutrition deets.
I jumped on the opportunity when the Red Bull reps asked. I mean… hang out with Red Bull people… OK! And Hello?! I’ve always wanted to go to Flugtag! But you are probably wondering…
What is Flugtag?
It’s where grown men (and women) build flying machines and launch them off a ramp at Red Bull’s official annual Flugtag event. Red Bull, gives you wings! (You can find out more info here).
Normally, the event is held in one location. This year was the first ever National event – held in 5 metro cities across the US. And the Chicken Whisperer’s flying in Long Beach broke the Flugtag World Record with a flight of 258 feet! Represent. Boo-yah!
Red Bull :: Gives You Wings
Hanging out with Red Bulls’s Director of Communications, Patrice Radden and Director of Scientific & Regulatory Affairs, registered dietician, Becki Holmes.
Hmmm… think I need help on my wardrobe.
The nutrition talk, given by Becki, was set up in the Lighthouse restaurant on the 3rd floor. Direct close-up view to Flugtag. Score! (feeling special being able to attend)
Do you drink Red Bull energy drinks? For sport? For play?
Red Bull Products :: The Facts
My (mis) conceptions about Red Bull :: I admit, I don’t drink “energy drinks” of any kind. Because I didn’t have a good perception of them. In the media, I hear about increased heart rates and becoming jittery. I know them in the bars, as Red Bull + Vodka and that it wasn’t a ‘good combo’ after drinking a few (any drink with alcohol isn’t good for you when you’ve had too many).
But if its one thing I know from being a researcher in my day job – become educated and then make a logical conclusion from the facts.
I think the bull cut-out on the tab is cool! Nice touch.
- First introduced in Thailand in 1978 – popular with Thai truck drivers and laborers.
- Co-founded by an Austrian entrepreneur. In 1987, Red Bull Energy Drink was first launched in Europe.
- In 1997, became the first energy drink in the U.S. marketplace.
- Global baby! Red Bull energy drink is sold in more than 160 countries (wouldn’t it be cool to see all the different product labels/designs?)
Caffeine FACTS: (source)
- Red Bull Energy drink: 80mg caffeine
- Home-Brewed Drip Coffee 8oz: 90 mg caffeine
- Coffeehouse Drip Coffee 8 oz: 180 mg caffeine!
I was surprised to find that the Red Bull Energy drink is actually lower in caffeine to my morning cup of home-brewed coffee! I can see why they are not recommended for children – I don’t give my kids coffee, unless its decaf! Same goes with nursing or pregnancy. Decaf coffee was only consumed those times.
And I can see why you would be jittery if you drank too many or you’re sensitive to caffeine.
So now we have the facts. I’m thinking I will give a Red Bull Energy Drink a try before working out. As long as I treat it like I would with my home-brewed coffee consumption – I wouldn’t be consuming more than 1 or 2 in a day. I would like it compared to my cup of coffee for ‘energy’ purposes.
BTW, if I remember correctly, the Red Bull company sponsors something like 800 athletes in a wide variety of sports!
Flugtag 2013 Fun – Long Beach
Swag! Cans of Red Bull in a cool Signature Red Bull Bag (not released until October 1st! – I was asked a few times about my bag).
Buffet – coconut shrimp, Kobe meatballs, chicken skewers…
I had to try one of each!
The crew is jamming!
The crews all did a little dance as they neared the end of the ramp.
Flight in action.
Haha! It was fun to be a part of this event. It was difficult to watch pilots go down with their flying machines. Some flying machines fell off the ramp upside down. Ha! But the pilots all came up out of the water in tip top shape. Tapping their helmet to know they were good. Then the rest the crew took their jolly jump in the water.
I was so jazzed that my family and I were able to be a part of the 1st National Flugtag event. Watch the Flugtag World Record being made. And find out the truths of Red Bull Energy Drinks. The Flugtag event energy was intense (110,000 people strong just in Long Beach alone)!
